The oldest park in Indianapolis, Military Park was once the site of a staging area where Union troops marched to any tune other than Dixie. It was also home to the first state fair in 1836. Due to its historical significance, the park has earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Military Park is one of the most bucolic areas within the White River State Park complex. There are old trees providing plenty of shade for picnickers and those enjoying a warm day on the park benches. The park also hosts such popular events as the AIDS walk in October and Jazz in the Park during summer. Open dawn until dusk, Military Park is well worth a visit, whether you're driving or marching.
